A 50/50 mohair/merino blend in a sport/worsted weight, terrific for shawls or cable worked mittens and hats. Again, as with our worsted Icelandic/angora blend, this is a bit too warm for a full sweater, but amazing in a cabled vest.
This works up for a dense cabled mitten size 2, a size 8 for the shawls, and a 6 for a cabled vest. It holds definition well, but mohair has no memory, which is why it is blended with the springy merino. In a vest the merino adds warmth and shape. In a shawl, on the larger needles, the mohair creates a drape you don’t find in the all wool fibers.
This blend also looks stunning when dyed with indigo. If you’re working with indigo you need to know that indigo will naturally “crock.” Crocking is part of the dying process, it is the indigo which was not able to bond to the fiber when exposed to air shaking off, and your hands may turn a light blue as you work with the wool. This is harmless, part of the process of working with natural indigo, and rinses off with water.
When you finish your piece wash it gently in cool water, block dry flat. In the case of an indigo piece, rinse until the water runs clear, usually about 5 rinses does it.
